Step by step

How a San Bernardino title loan works, from first call to payoff

Here is what actually happens after you fill in the form above or call 909-453-3547, so nothing comes as a surprise.

  1. Start with your car's details

Enter the year, make, model and miles, or call and read them off your registration card. The estimate is based on what similar cars sell for, so an accurate mileage reading gives you a more useful number.

  2. Talk it through with a specialist

A specialist calls you back to go over the estimate and explain what the lender will ask for. It's the right moment to ask anything you're unsure about, including how repayment works.

  3. Send photos of the car

Lenders usually want clear photos of all four sides, the odometer and the VIN, which is on the driver's side of the dashboard and on the door frame. Daylight photos in a driveway or parking lot work best.

  4. Upload your documents

Take phone photos of the documents listed above. If your registration has lapsed or your insurance card is out of date, sort that out first so the review isn't held up.

  5. The lender reviews your file

The lender looks at the car's value, your income and the title, and may call you to check details. The lender, not us, decides whether to make a loan and on what terms.

  6. Read everything, then sign

If you receive an offer, read the whole agreement: the total cost, the payment schedule and what happens if a payment is late. Ask questions before you sign. You keep driving your car the whole time.

  7. Repay and get a clear title back

When the loan is paid in full, the lender releases its lien and the title is clear again. Paying early can lower your total cost if your agreement allows it.

Title questions

Lost title, a bank lien, or a title that isn't in your name

Title problems are the most common reason a San Bernardino application stalls. Most of them can be fixed at the DMV field office at 1310 N Waterman Ave.

Your title is lost or damaged

California replaces titles through the DMV. Apply for a duplicate with form REG 227 (Application for Duplicate or Paperless Title) at the Waterman Ave office or through dmv.ca.gov. You can start your estimate while the new title is on its way.

A bank or credit union still has a lien

If you're still paying for the car, the bank or credit union is listed as legal owner on the title. Some lenders can work with a remaining balance; others need the lien released first. Have your latest payoff statement handy when the specialist calls.

The title isn't in your name yet

A car bought from a friend or relative often still shows the old owner. The title has to be transferred into your name at the DMV first. If two owners are joined by “AND”, both usually need to sign; with “OR”, either owner can.

You just moved here from another state

An out-of-state title has to be registered and titled in California before a California lender can use it. The DMV includes a vehicle verification as part of that transfer, and the Waterman Ave office handles it.

Where we help

Serving every part of San Bernardino and the cities around it

Our San Bernardino specialists talk with drivers from Downtown and the Del Rosa corridor to Verdemont in the north end, the University District around Cal State San Bernardino, Arrowhead Springs at the foot of the mountains, and Muscoy on the west side. The whole process runs online and by phone, so it doesn't matter which side of the 215 you live on.

Plenty of our callers commute. San Bernardino sits where I-215, I-10 and the 210 Foothill Freeway meet, and Highway 18 climbs from here toward Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear. A car that gets you down the 10 to work, or up the hill on the weekend, is worth keeping, and keeping it is the whole point of a title loan.

We also help drivers in Highland, Colton, Loma Linda, Grand Terrace and Redlands, and across the Inland Empire. If you're closer to one of these cities, its own page has the local number and office details:

Questions worth asking any title lender

A title loan uses your car as security, so it pays to be careful. Whoever you borrow from, ask:

  • What is the total I will pay back, not just the monthly payment?
  • How many payments are there, and when is each one due?
  • Can I pay the loan off early, and is there any charge for that?
  • What happens if a payment is late, and who do I call?
  • Is the lender licensed in California? (You can look it up in the DFPI licensee search.)
  • When the loan is paid off, how and when is the lien released?

If any answer is unclear, wait and ask again before signing. A good lender will explain every line.

Check a lender's license

Every California title lender must hold a California Financing Law license. Look any lender up in the California DFPI licensee search before you sign.

Know your car's value

Kelley Blue Book and J.D. Power (NADA) show typical values for your year, make, model and miles. Lenders also look at condition and any money still owed on the car.

What lenders look at

  • Your car's year, mileage and condition
  • How much equity you have (value minus any balance owed)
  • Your ability to repay from your income
  • A clear title in your name, or a lien the lender can pay off

The lender sets the final amount and terms after reviewing your application.

Questions

San Bernardino title loan questions

Get my free estimate
Can I keep driving my car?

Yes. You keep your car and drive it as usual while you repay the loan. The lender holds the title as security until the loan is paid.

Do I need perfect credit?

No. Lenders look mainly at your car's value and your ability to repay. Your credit may still be reviewed.

What if my car isn't fully paid off?

You may still qualify if you have enough equity in it. Your loan specialist can check this with you.

How fast can I get the money?

It depends on the lender and how quickly your documents are verified. Your specialist gives you a realistic timeline before you decide.

Can I apply by phone?

Yes. Call 909-453-3547 and a specialist will take your details.

I lost my title. Can I still apply in San Bernardino?

Yes, you can start your estimate now. You'll need a title in your name before the loan is finished. Request a duplicate at the San Bernardino DMV field office, 1310 N Waterman Ave, San Bernardino, CA 92404.

Do you help drivers outside San Bernardino?

Yes. You can apply online or by phone from anywhere in San Bernardino, Highland, Colton and the Inland Empire.

Can I pay my loan off early?

Many lenders allow early payoff. Your loan agreement lists any prepayment terms, so read it before you sign.

What happens if I miss a payment?

Call your lender right away. Missed payments can lead to fees and, in the worst case, repossession of the car. Your agreement explains the lender's process and your rights under California law.

Is my information safe?

The form is encrypted, and your details go only to licensed lenders who can review your request.

Where do I get a duplicate title in San Bernardino?

At the San Bernardino DMV field office, 1310 N Waterman Ave, San Bernardino, CA 92404, or online at dmv.ca.gov with form REG 227. You can start your estimate while the replacement is on its way.

My car still has a loan with a credit union. Can I still apply?

Often yes, if the car is worth more than what you still owe. Have your latest payoff statement ready; the lender decides whether it can work with the existing lien.

Do I have to visit an office in San Bernardino?

No. You can do everything online and by phone, and send photos and documents from your phone. If you'd rather talk it through, call 909-453-3547.

Is a title loan my only option?

No. Before borrowing against your car, compare other options, such as a credit union personal loan, a payment plan with the company you owe, or help from family. A title loan puts your car at risk if you can't repay, so borrow only what you need and can pay back.

California: loans made or arranged pursuant to a California Finance Lenders Law license #60DBO-53460. Not all applicants qualify. Loan amounts, rates and terms are set by the lender after reviewing your application and vary by state and vehicle. Read your loan agreement before you sign.
